Rhino’s are safe when they are young, but as soon as their horn grows they are a target for Poachers who cut off the horn (to sell as a aphrodisiac), and leave the Rhino to die. Its very sad and terrible especially as Rhinos could be wiped out due to this.

I found Moorhen pair and wondered if it was the same couple I had painted the year before in The Homemaker? This year they had made a nest on the river bank due to all the rain this year. As I watched the male went about collecting bugs and the female feed the chicks. At one point the male chased away a large 3 foot grass snake across the river. I was so impressed with this brave little bird, that I decided to paint the family. The next day the river flooded, and the nest, chick and eggs got washed away. When I painted this I was listening to The Grapes of Wrath – and I felt so sad at the end of the book when the floods came as the same thing happened to this little family

A new beginning

While sitting on the beach in Devon, I saw this little Gull looking sadly out to sea. I wondered if he was looking for somewhere else to move to now the mating time was over. If you look closely by the rocks you can see a old copper ring, this is my favourite ring that dates back to Henry VIII. I was going to call this ‘Something lost and something found’.

Walking along the Bradford-on-Avon river one afternoon I saw a our local Heron fishing with a Cormorant – I wondered who would catch the first fish, and the Heron was the winner. I felt sorry for the fish, if you look close he has a drop of water falling off his face, like a sad sorry tear.. he didn’t last long, in a matter of seconds he was in side the hungry Heron.
